Substitute Teacher Information
The Smart Start Early Care and Education Substitute Teacher Program will provide you the tools you need to become a qualified substitute teacher for a child care center or family child care home.
Substitute teacher candidates in our 5-day state-approved program receive information regarding:
  • how children learn and how to support their learning
  • brain development and child development theory
  • supporting young children with special needs
  • classroom management, learning centers and the daily routine
  • CPR and first aid, health and safety, infectious diseases
  • recognizing and reporting child abuse and neglect
  • culturally, linguistically, and developmentally appropriate practices and activities
  • and so much more!
The Smart Start Early Care and Education Substitute Teacher Program provides:
  • a training content notebook and resource material
  • a certificate for 18 state-approved hours of credit by Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care & Learning
  • a certificate for CPR and first aid training
  • employment search tips and child care resource information to develop a personal plan for a job search

Minimum substitute teacher qualifications for the Smart Start training program include:
  • a clear criminal background check
  • a minimum of 18 years of age
  • a minimum of a GED or high school diploma
  • successful completion of the five day training; and
  • a commitment to work a minimum of 4 days a month as a substitute teacher
