Child Care Center Directors/Administrators or Family Child Care Providers
 
One of the goals of the Smart Start Early Care & Education Substitute Teacher Program is to provide qualified substitute teachers to licensed and registered Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning child care facilities. You can benefit from this professional development program by gaining access to:
  • an available pool of knowledgeable and energetic substitute teachers
  • substitute teachers with 18 hours of state-approved training (Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning "DECAL")
  • a pool of potential future early care and education teachers
  • consistency of staffing when a regular teacher is out
Substitute teacher candidates in our 5-day state-approved program receive information regarding:
  • how children learn and how to support their learning
  • brain development and child development theory
  • supporting young children with special needs
  • classroom management, learning centers and the daily routine
  • CPR and first aid, health and safety, infectious diseases
  • recognizing and reporting child abuse and neglect
  • culturally, linguistically, and developmentally appropriate practices and activities
  • and so much more!
Minimum substitute teacher qualifications for the Smart Start training program include:
  • a clear criminal background check
  • a minimum of 18 years of age
  • a minimum of a GED or high school diploma
  • successful completion of the five day training; and
  • a commitment to work a minimum of 4 days a month as a substitute teacher
