One of the goals of the Smart Start Early Care & Education Substitute Teacher Program is to provide qualified substitute teachers to licensed and registered Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning child care facilities.
You can benefit from this professional development program by gaining access to:
- an available pool of knowledgeable and energetic substitute teachers
- substitute teachers with 18 hours of state-approved training (Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning "DECAL")
- a pool of potential future early care and education teachers
- consistency of staffing when a regular teacher is out

Substitute teacher candidates in our 5-day state-approved program receive information regarding:
- how children learn and how to support their learning
- brain development and child development theory
- supporting young children with special needs
- classroom management, learning centers and the daily routine
- CPR and first aid, health and safety, infectious diseases
- recognizing and reporting child abuse and neglect
- culturally, linguistically, and developmentally appropriate practices and activities
- and so much more!

Minimum substitute teacher qualifications for the Smart Start training program include:
- a clear criminal background check
- a minimum of 18 years of age
- a minimum of a GED or high school diploma
- successful completion of the five day training; and
- a commitment to work a minimum of 4 days a month as a substitute teacher
